Since the 1950s, when short but fast players had a chance of making it onto a professional court – such as the legendary Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics, known for startling innovations like dribbling and passing behind the back – the sport has been dominated by ever taller athletes, starting with the arrival of Wilt, The Stilt, Chamberlain.

Now, The National Basketball Association has come to realize that the trend to tall has demoralized people of who fall within the usual range of human height and that it has positively devastated short people.

Compared to the slam-dunking ways of the seven footers, these distressed athletes just can’t get people interested in watching them hoop it up. As a result, interest in the game as a participation sport has waned, and the association is concerned that, as fewer people work up their excitement about playing it, fewer of them will pay to see it.

In an effort to return basketball to the widely poplar place it held in the minds and hearts of the American public before it became the exclusive province of players whose mothers are suspected of stretching them as infants, the association is considering legitimizing a court just for people of average height, with a special accommodation for shorter people. The basic plan calls for the basket to be lowered by one foot for players from 5’ 6” to 6’ 6” and two feet for people who are even shorter but still imagine slam-dunking the ball and hanging from the hoop in a celebratory manner. Fear is part of the fundamental core of human existence, as connected to the basic functions of survival and the psyche as the survival instinct or the need to mate. Fear and anxiety, therefore, are among the staples of any genre that deems itself fit to entertain the masses, an art form to be mastered in the hands of a true artiste. Fear, dread, and anxiety are all integral components of any successful horror story, for example, but not everyone who writes horror manages to get the mix of the important elements — pacing, plot, and characterization — all of which must be just right to create a classic that will frighten generations long after the first copy was printed. There are a few that manage to accomplish the difficult feat of being eternal in their horror and long-lasting in their ability to turn anxiety into outright terror.

Edgar Allan Poe, author of “Annabel Lee” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”, is easily recognized as one of the foremost masters of horror and the macabre. His works have inspired terror and anxiety in many individuals, primarily through the use of heavy psychological tones, as opposed to the gore and blood themes used and abused by writers of his time. Poe’s collected works easily counts as some of the most frightening material ever written, especially now, in an age where horror movies are relegated to two hours of bloodshed and senseless violence, lacking any true horror and relying solely on shock value to appear “scary.” Poe also stands out as being among the few who can make even the most mundane things seem utterly terrifying, a feat emulated by Stephen King and several Japanese horror authors, but never truly duplicated.

Talented but feared is how would be hopefuls in search of fame feel about entering a show like the X Factor. Contestants know what to expect and are prepared to listen to comments on their performance, but what do they get an ear bashing of abuse. You can not blame the next Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye’s holding back from entering the show all because they need to visit weight watchers.

Most of the time the remarks projected from the judge’s mouth can be very humiliating. Comments can be destructive not constructive towards the finalist where their appearance/weight or how they have a pimple to many is disclosed in front of millions.

God damn it. this is a talent show. How many of you sit back in shock when the results are announced and the most talented are ushered through the exit door.

Let us change the rules of the X Factor so that everyone gets a fair crack of the whip, how you ask?

To make it fair we call the show the Blind Factor where the judges at no time throughout the contest get to see the aspiring hopefuls, because all singing is performed behind a screen. This way you will be sure the winner of the contest is judged purely on talent alone.

There are loop holes where fellow colleagues that normally work alongside the judges will break the rules and give some inside information to influence the judge’s decision in making the right choice. This is easily solved by whisking the panel of judges off to a safe house in the country where they have no contact with the outside world whatsoever.
